The 2024/2025 final-year Public Relations Management students in the Department of Communication Studies of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA), are embarking on a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project on November 22nd at the Nkwantanang 7 and 8 Primary and JHS schools in Madina, Accra.
The theme for the CSR Project is: “Creating Sustainable Futures through Education: Every pencil counts, every child matters.” This maiden edition is part of students’ practical course requirements.
The CSR Initiative highlights the University of Professional Studies, Accra’s commitment to equipping its students with the skills and knowledge to excel academically and contribute meaningfully to society, in accordance with its motto: Scholarship and Professionalism.
According to Dr. Adwoa Amankwah, “This CSR initiative beyond bridging the gap between theory and practice, aims to cultivate leadership skills in the students, preparing them for future roles in the corporate world, and foster a culture of volunteerism that empowers them to drive community and societal development”.
The Project focuses on addressing a pressing need identified by the students during their environmental scanning of the schools under the guidance of their lecturers.
According to Mr. Godwin Kusi Danquah, ” We identified a significant challenge at the school—many children lack basic educational resources such as reading materials, school uniforms, shoes, and writing tools. We felt compelled to come together and contribute to improving the educational experience of these children.”
In response, the students are organizing a donation drive to provide the students of La Nkwantanang with the necessary resources to support their education and well-being.
The Initiative aims not only to alleviate some of the challenges faced by the students but also to raise awareness about the importance of corporate social responsibility within the context of education.
According to Dr. Amankwah, “in previous years, students conducted outreach programs in neighboring communities to promote CSR awareness. This year, however, we decided to undertake a practical CSR initiative”.
The day’s activities will feature educational talks on topics such as personal and menstrual hygiene, road safety, study and life skill development, higher education experiences, and faith, followed by engaging and fun games. The event will conclude with a donation that will provide school uniforms, library books, shoes, and toiletries, among others to the La Nkwantanang Basic and JHS Schools.
