Ghanaian musician Guru, also known as Maradona Adjei Yeboah, has been disqualified from the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) Presidential race due to his non-residency in a hall of residence, which violated Article 30 (1)(a) of the UGSRC Constitution.

This disqualification was extended to his running mate, Jeffery Adu-Yeboah. Lawrence Edinam Egleh also faced disqualification for the same reason. As a result, the list of eligible candidates for the UGSRC presidential election now includes Emmanuel Mensah & Justice Mbawin Abugri, Nii Afoley Odai & Abigail Ohenewaa Addai, and Blessing Mantey & Martin Agbefia. The UGSRC Electoral Commission emphasized its commitment to ensuring a transparent election process.

The disqualification of both candidates highlighted the strict adherence to the UGSRC’s eligibility criteria, specifically the requirement for candidates to be residents of a hall of residence. This rule is intended to ensure that candidates have a direct connection to the student body they seek to represent. With the remaining candidates now eligible, the UGSRC Electoral Commission’s focus will be on conducting a fair and transparent election, aiming to uphold the integrity of the democratic process within the university.

The Commission will ensure that all campaign activities are conducted according to the regulations set forth in the UGSRC Constitution and related guidelines. Voters are expected to participate actively and choose among the eligible candidates, who will have the opportunity to present their platforms and visions for the student body.
