The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is having its Nation Delegates Elections at the Accra Sports Stadium today. Whiles elections are yet to start, we take a look at the contenders for the top position of the national chairman and what the odds are for contenders.
Before that, however, a bit of education on these activities of the party to get a clear picture.

This is the National Delegates Conference of the party as stipulated in Article 9 clause 4(b) of the party’s constitution which states;
“The National Annual Delegates Conference shall also Elect National Officers when required.”
It happens per the party’s constitution every four years to help them elect new national leadership. Before this happens however, there are similar elections at the polling station, constituency, and regional levels to elect executives to hold the forth at that level. The party has so far done these as you might have noticed in the media.

These individuals elected at the lower levels of the party make up the delegates eligible to vote at this national level elections. They however aren’t the only eligible voters. The electoral college for this election also includes Fifteen (15) Members of the National Council of Elders, Twelve(12) delegates from every external branch as defined under section 8(2) of this Constitution, One TESCON representative from each recognized tertiary institution in the country, Fifteen (15) Patrons elected from among themselves; Founding Members across the country who are signatories to the Registration documents of the Party at the Electoral Commission and All Members of Parliament.
In the case where the party is in government like the instance of this election the party’s constitution adds that “all New Patriotic Party Members who are Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives” form part of eligible voters who make up this electoral college. On this background, this election is going to see a full house today, as described by constitution.
So you might have notices once again that there was a similar meeting of the party earlier this year. That was part of their annual delegate conference to deliberate on issues concerning the part.
As prescribed by the party’s constitution in Article 9 clause (4), the annual delegates conference deliberates and make appropriate resolutions on the National Chairperson’s Report; the National Treasurer’s Statement of Accounts and any other matters.
