Soldiers deployed on duty at the AngloGold Ashanti Mines in Obuasi have shot 8 to death in a violent clash of alleged 60 illegal miners
The incident occurred late on Saturday, January 18, 2025, around 11:00 PM, when a group of over 60 illegal miners breached the security fence and attempted to access the Deep Decline area of the mine
According to a press release attached below from the Ghana Armed Forces, the miners were armed with locally manufactured rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, gas cylinders, etc
Following the incident, President John Dramani Mahama directed an immediate investigation into the violent clashes between illegal miners and military personnel stationed at AngloGold Ashanti Mines.
In a statement issued on January 19, the President called for anyone found to have acted unlawfully during the incident to be held accountable.
