Salim Abubakari, the Presiding Member for Sagnarigu and Assembly Member for the Ward K Electoral Area, has submitted a petition to the National Vetting Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding concerns about the recent vetting process for the position of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sagnarigu.
In the petition addressed to the National Chairman of the NDC, Mr. Salim expressed dissatisfaction with how the vetting process was conducted. He alleged that a lack of due diligence, inadequate planning, and favoritism may have influenced the final shortlist of candidates. As a result, he is calling for a fair and inclusive process that allows qualified assembly members, including himself, to undergo vetting by the National Vetting Committee.
“As a member, I deeply understand the Sagnarigu Municipality and its people. My experience, knowledge of local issues, and commitment to development make me highly qualified for this role,” he stated in the petition.
The petition further highlights the vital role played by assembly members and presiding members in local governance, emphasizing their contributions to selecting Council of State Members and ensuring smooth administrative operations. Hon. Abubakari warned that excluding dedicated members from the process could demoralize grassroots participation in the party’s activities.
The petition was also copied to the Office of the President, the Chief of Staff, the National Vetting Committee Chairman, and the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy & Religious Affairs.
The NDC’s vetting committee has yet to respond to the concerns raised in the petition. However, this development has sparked discussions on the need for transparency and fairness in local government appointments.
