President Akufo-Addo has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Deputy Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in charge of Operations.
A press release dated July 17, and signed by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, said the appointment was made by law.
“This appointment is under the advice of the Police Council at its meeting held today, Wednesday, 17th July 2024, during which COP Yohuno’s exceptional credentials and dedication to duty were acknowledged,” a part of the statement reads.
What are the duties?
The duties of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Deputy IGP, and Commissioner of Police in Ghana are not explicitly stated in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. However, their roles and responsibilities are outlined in the Police Service Act, 1970 (Act 350) and the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2197).
Inspector-General of Police (IGP):
• Head of the Ghana Police Service
• Responsible for the overall direction, control, and administration of the police force
• Advises the government on police matters
• Ensures the maintenance of law and order
• Exercises disciplinary control over police officers
Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Deputy IGP):
• Assists the IGP in the performance of duties
• Acts as IGP in the absence of the IGP
• Responsible for a specific aspect of police work (e.g., operations, administration, or criminal investigations)
Commissioner of Police:
• Heads a police region or a specialized unit (e.g., Criminal Investigations Department or Traffic Police)
• Responsible for police operations and administration within their jurisdiction
• Reports to the IGP or Deputy IGP
