The Assistant Commissioner of Immigration in charge of the Migration Information Center for Returnees at Kotoka International Airport, Yaa Oppong Opoku Agyemang, has revealed that 12,646 people have been deported to Ghana from 2020 to November 2024.
She said of these deported individuals, 8,186 were males and 4,459 were females which highlights the number of people who have been returned to Ghana during this period.
Yaa Oppong Opoku Agyemang in an interview with the media at the international migrants organised by Sewa Foundation in collaboration with Ghana Airport further emphasized that the Migration Information Center for Returnees at Kotoka International Airport plays a significant role in assisting and providing support to the deported individuals upon their return to Ghana.
According to her, the deportees are typically individuals who face challenges in their host countries, ranging from issues related to immigration status, violations of local laws, or other legal concerns.
She added that, in just the last two weeks, they received 180 deportees from Germany and Libya respectively, and 25 from Germany just this week. She highlighted that the 12,646 Deported are of Ghanaian origin.
The President of Sewa Foundation, Jones Owusu Yeboah on his part highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of migration, noting that many deported individuals often face challenges that stem from socio-economic difficulties, lack of opportunities, or unstable conditions in their home countries
