Concerns have been raised about a potential coup attempt allegedly orchestrated by the outgoing government to evade prosecution for corruption. The claims, made by Bismark Kwabla Kpobi, highlight fears of a deliberate disruption of Ghana’s Fourth Republic amidst the ongoing political transition.
According to Mr. Kpobi, the five-member Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) team, tasked with investigating corrupt practices by outgoing government appointees, has garnered widespread support among Ghanaians. However, this has reportedly sparked unease within the outgoing administration, leading to speculations of a planned coup to derail the efforts of the incoming government.
Sources suggest that the alleged coup could involve the use of vigilantes in uniform, possibly supported by senior security officers loyal to the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. Tensions are further heightened by disagreements over the re-collation and declaration of constituency seat results, as well as perceived partisanship in the actions of the Electoral Commission (EC).
Mr. Kpobi called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership, and other stakeholders to remain vigilant during this critical transition period. He urged professional security personnel to closely monitor the activities of newly promoted officers and take decisive steps to prevent any unconstitutional actions.
The ORAL team, which aims to recover stolen assets, freeze bank accounts, revoke diplomatic passports, and hold corrupt officials accountable, has been tasked with resetting the country’s governance landscape. Supporters of the NDC believe the team’s work is crucial to restoring public trust in government institutions.
As Ghana prepares for the swearing-in of H.E. John Mahama on January 7, 2025, security experts and political analysts are urging calm, vigilance, and adherence to constitutional principles to ensure a peaceful transition of power.
Efforts to reach representatives from the outgoing government for comments on the allegations have not yielded a response at the time of publication.
Bismark Kwabla Kpobi writes :
The transition team must be vigilant and watch out for any planned coup attempts by the outgoing government to escape prosecution of corrupt appointees. The five-member ORAL team, tasked with investigating and gathering intelligence on the corrupt practices of outgoing government appointees, has gained significant support from Ghanaians.
Intelligence sources and individuals have revealed that the outgoing government might attempt a coup, utilizing NPP vigilantes in uniform to disrupt the Fourth Republic. This could be orchestrated during the disagreement between the two parties regarding the re-collation and declaration of some constituency seats. The actions of the EC boss are a prime example of this.
The planned coup might be championed by NPP vigilantes in uniform, with the support of some senior security personnel. It is crucial that H.E. John Mahama, the NDC leadership, and all stakeholders remain alert and monitor the actions and utterances of the outgoing government.
Professional security personnel must take all necessary steps to halt and abort any coup attempts by the few vigilantes recruited and promoted within the security institutions. It is essential to keep a close eye on the movements, talks, actions, and orders of newly promoted officers.
The special voting results, which showed security services voting massively for the NDC, must not be wasted by a coup. The ORAL team must be allowed to reset the country, confiscate properties, freeze bank accounts, revoke diplomatic passports, and bring back those who have fled the country to account for their actions when JM is sworn into office on January 7th.
