Following a rally in Niamey supporting the Nigerian junta, protesters applaud Nigerien troops as they assemble in front of the French Embassy.

Following a coup last week, the French foreign ministry says it will soon begin evacuating its citizens in Niger.

According to a telegram sent out by the French embassy in Niamey, evacuations by air were being arranged in light of the deteriorating security situation and “will take place very soon in a minimal period,” the AFP said.

President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger was deposed last week by soldiers from his presidential guard, who had seized control.

After Mali and Burkina Faso, it is the third nation in the Sahel to undergo a coup in less time.

Anti-French sentiment has accompanied the episodes, and the nations have embraced relations with Russia.
