In a press conference held today at the NDC Headquarters, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon Cassiel Ato Forson, launched scathing allegations against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, accusing him of breaching key sections of the governing act, Bank of Ghana Act and mismanaging the nation’s economy.
Highlighting alleged transgressions, Hon Ato Forson pointed out that the Governor’s actions had violated both sections 30 and 60 of the act. The accusations further extended to the Akufu Addo government, with the opposition contending that the Bank of Ghana had been transformed into a “printing press,” alluding to fiscal irresponsibility.
Additionally, the opposition leader criticized the Governor’s decision to approve a substantial $250 million new head office project. This allocation of funds was met with skepticism by Hon Ato Forson, who questioned the financial prudence of such an undertaking during these times of economic instability.
In a firm tone, Hon Ato Forson issued an ultimatum, stating that the Governor has 21 days from today to tender his resignation. Should the Governor fail to comply, the opposition pledged to unite with the people of Ghana to stage a mass demonstration at the Bank of Ghana, with the objective of compelling the Governor and his deputies to step down.
Sammy Gyamfi, the national communication officer of the NDC said the governor is jail bound since his actions and inactions are criminal.
The situation remains tense as Ghanaians await the Bank of Ghana’s response to the allegations and the subsequent call for resignation. As the nation watches closely, concerns about the economy’s trajectory and the future leadership of the Bank of Ghana continue to dominate discussions.
