The highest position in party hierarchy for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is chairmanship position. In this year’s contest, the position is being contested by a total of 6 candidates although the initial number was 8.
Former ambassador to Canada, Joseph Ayikoi Otoo who was initially an aspirant withdrew from the race to make the number a total of 7 contesting candidates.
These 6 are Gifty Asantewa Ayeh (Daavi Ama), Prof. Christiopher Ameyaw Ekumfi, Stephen Ayensu Ntim, Stephen Asamoah Boateng (popularly known as Asabee), Sammy Crabbe, Akwesi Osei Adjei and George Kwabena Abankwa-Yeboah.
In the lead to the elections, many have described it as a somewhat two-horse race between the Stephens in the race; Stephen Ayensu Ntim and Stephen Asamoah Boateng popularly known as Asabee.
These two seem to stand tall because of their seemingly strong track record in the face of the elections. For Stephen Ayensu Ntim, this is his 5th time running in the race after trying four unsuccessful attempts in the past years. Many have described the continuous contest from his side as loyalty to the party which is most likely going to be rewarded by the party this time around. He has also had support from the some stalwarts in the party, Mr. Gabby Otchere Darko being the latest in recent times. His story seems to be similar to that of the sitting president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo who attempted presidential candidate and presidency a number of times before getting both. His reward; getting the nod of the party and that of Ghanaians years later. Many believe the party, being a rewarder of loyalty might give Mr. Stephen Ayensu Ntim the nod this time around especially when on all occasions of his loss, he has accepted defeat and promised continuous support for the party, which he does.

The second “weight”, another Stephen is in the person of Stephen Asamoah Boateng, popularly called Asabee. He comes into the race with a track record of service within the ranks and files of the party including member of parliament for Mfantseman Constituency, minister of state and currently serves as the board chair of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA). He is touted with a strong connection to the grassroots which might come in as a strength. Some analysts project that probably his 60/40 policy as promised might be a point of attraction for many delegates. His policy seeks to ensure that whenever the party secures government, 40 percent of appointments will strictly come from the party whiles the remaining can go to others.

The next contender is the outgoing treasurer of the party, George Kwabena Abankwa-Yeboah. He is touted by analysts to be the third force in this elections. His track record remains largely the fact that he has been able to mobilize funds for the party to secure two terms of elections. Many say this track-record gives him the prowess as a strong contender who can, moving on, be able to gather funds for the party being a central requirement in any organization.

Gifty Asantewa Ayeh, A.K.A Daavi Ama, is the only female in the race to become the party’s national chairman. Should she win, she goes into history as the first woman to ascend the high office of Chairperson of the party. Madam Asantewah Ayeh also has a track-record as a founding member of the party and former national treasurer of the party. In the past years, she has been very vocal about the role of women within the party.

Prof. Christopher Ameyaw Ekumfi is also a contender in this race. He is a an academic and politician with the New Patriotic party serving as Minister of Education in the John Agyekum Kufour administration. He has also served the party as a member of parliament for the Techiman North Constituency, serving from 2009 to 2013. He comes into the race with a promise to give back the party what they have given him whiles promising to work strongly together with the youths.

Mr. Sammy Crabbe another contender is a former second vice chairman of the party who comes into the race having been suspended from the said position. He has on some occassions touted himself as a strong advocate within the party, championing their rights and welfare.

Last is Mr. Akwesi Osei Adjei. He also comes into the race with a track record of service to the party in various capacities. He was member of parliament for Ejisu-Juaben constituency from January 2005; running 5 consecutive times after that. He also served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from July 2007 to February 2009. Before that he had served as Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry from April 2003.
