A 20-year-old driver, Abdul Wahab Mohammed, also known as Kwabena Santoma, was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a circuit court in Old Tafo, Kumasi, on Monday, June 3, for robbery.
Mohammed was found guilty of robbing a tricycle rider of a mobile phone worth GH₵4,000 and cash amounting to GH₵340. He was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery, to which he confessed. The court convicted him based on his plea and imposed the 20-year sentence.
State Prosecutor Inspector S.K. Oppong informed the court that the complainant, a tricycle rider residing in Pankrono Estate, was attacked by Mohammed and his accomplice, identified only as Faruk, on Saturday, June 1, around 12:30 a.m. The convict brandished a pistol and robbed the victim of his iPhone 12 and cash.
The victim’s alarm led to Mohammed’s arrest, while Faruk escaped. Mohammed was taken to the Tafo Pankrono Police Station, where the stolen cash was recovered from him, and he confessed to the crime in a caution statement witnessed independently.
The court also heard that an informant tricked the accomplice, who later abandoned the stolen phone in Ashtown, Kumasi.
The phone was retrieved by the police and identified by the victim. Mohammed was subsequently charged and arraigned. Police sources confirmed that Faruk was later lynched by a mob in another robbery incident.
