In a bid to tackle the rising incidents of phone thefts and protect users from potential data breaches, Apple has rolled out a new security feature called Stolen Device Protection in its latest iOS update (version 17.3).
The feature aims to make it significantly harder for thieves to wipe phones, access Apple ID, or compromise important accounts. The feature, found within the iPhone settings, addresses a vulnerability exploited by thieves, preventing unauthorized access to Apple accounts, deletion of iCloud files, and potential financial harm through the Keychain password manager.
How Stolen Device Protection Works:
Stolen Device Protection functions by keeping track of a user’s “familiar locations,” such as home or workplace. If someone attempts to perform specific actions on the device outside these locations, additional biometric security measures are triggered. This reduces the reliance on passcodes, making it more challenging for thieves to compromise security.
The feature emphasizes biometric features like Face ID or Touch ID, making it difficult for thieves to erase contents or reset the phone. If a thief tries to wipe the device, Stolen Device Protection will require a biometric scan to verify the rightful owner.
Security Measures Against Thieves:
To deter thieves attempting critical security settings, a two-step authentication process is implemented. If someone tries to sign out of an Apple ID account or reset the phone in an unfamiliar location, they must authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID, wait an hour, and then undergo a second biometric scan.
Apple emphasizes that these security measures are designed to prevent thieves from executing critical operations, ensuring users can mark their devices as lost and secure their Apple accounts effectively. The company’s move comes in response to the surge in phone thefts reported globally.
This significant update not only enhances the security of Apple devices but also underscores the company’s commitment to safeguarding user data and privacy.
