The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has announced September as the 2024 Tourism Month and UN World Tourism Day.

Tourism Month is a month-long celebration of the rich Ghanaian heritage, ranging from food, clothing, and music to sightseeing, among others.

Outlining the events for Tourism Month, the Director of Marketing at the Ghana Tourism Authority, Betty Kobi, listed a number of exciting activities earmarked for the month-long celebration of tourism in September.

Some of these activities include the Oguaa Fetu Afahye in Cape Coast, Central Region; Asogli Teza (Yam Festival) in Ho, Volta Region; Kobine Festival in Lawra, Upper West Region; Kundum Festival in Axim, Western Region; Ahobaa Kese Festival in Gomoa Assin in the Central Region; and the Odwira Festival in Akropong, Eastern Region.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of GTA, Ben Anane-Nsiah, clarified that the celebration of Tourism Month does not imply that tourism should only take place in September. Rather, the authority adopted Tourism Month to heighten tourism activities, in line with what the UN does.

“Our ultimate objective is to make tourism a year-round activity. We chose September as Tourism Month because it coincides with International Tourism Day, allowing us to promote tourism as many tourists will be entering the country around this time,” he said.

He further urged all stakeholders in the tourism industry to play an active role in the quest to promote tourism in Ghana.

The Member of Parliament for the Mpraeso Constituency, Davies Opoku Ansah, speaking at the launch endorsed the Tourism Month.

Tourism Month in Ghana was instituted by the Ghana Tourism Authority to encourage the patronage of festivals, events, tourist sites, and attractions in the country, as well as to highlight the critical role domestic tourism plays in growing an inclusive and sustainable tourism economy.

The UN World Tourism Day is commemorated annually on 27 September to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political, and economic value.

This year’s Tourism Month will be climaxed with the United Nations World Tourism Day celebrations from Thursday, 26th September to Sunday, 29th September 2024.
