The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs Division has seized 53 handguns (side weapons), 65 pieces of live ammunition, 74 magazines, and a PC hoster at the Golden Jubilee Terminal in Tema.
The accused were apprehended and sent to the Marine and Railway Police Station in Tema for further investigation.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, November 20, Customs Commissioner Brigadier Zibrim Ayorrogo stated that products were intercepted on Monday, November 4.
He claimed that the 40-foot container with the number MEDU4496951 landed at Tema Port with the reported autos and personal effects cargo.
The guns were imported from the USA.
During a routine inspection of the container by customs officers at the Golden Jubilee Terminal on Friday, November 15, 2024, in front of the importer representative and declarant/agent, the customs examination team found sixty-five (65) live ammunition, seventy-four (74) magazines, and fifty-three (53) side arms (pistols) hidden in three separate suitcases.
“The Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Intelligence and Investigations Unit and the Customs Division’s Preventive Unit were promptly informed of the incident by the Customs examination team.
Following notification, the Customs Preventive Unit and GRA Intelligence and Investigations Unit personnel identified that fifty-three (53) side guns (pistols), seventy-four (74) magazines, and sixty-five (65) live ammunition were hidden in three separate suitcases.
The live ammunition, magazines, and guns were confiscated. Every other item in the shipment was also carefully inspected and held for additional research.
Also, the purchaser’s representative and the agent were detained and questioned about the confiscated goods.
After that, the suspects were moved to Tema’s Marine and Railway Police Station for additional examination.
