The Office of the President has reaffirmed its directive regarding the acquisition of official government vehicles by outgoing Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, and other political appointees to return all vehicles as the current administration’s term ends.

This directive, first issued at the end of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s first term in 2020, prohibits Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, Special Assistants, Special Aides to the President and Vice President, and all other political appointees under the Presidential Office Act, 1993 (Act 463), from acquiring government vehicles.

As the President’s second and final term comes to a close, this policy remains firmly in place.

Historically, a convention existed under previous administrations allowing appointees to purchase one official saloon vehicle via valuation by the State Transport Company Limited. However, President Akufo-Addo has reiterated that this practice will not apply under his leadership. No government vehicle shall be acquired by any appointee of the current administration.

For clarity, the directive applies to all categories of political appointees, including Ministers of State, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, Special Assistants, Special Aides to the President and Vice President, as well as Chairpersons and Members of Statutory Boards and Corporations.

All government vehicles currently in the possession of these appointees must be returned to the Chief Director of their respective Ministries by Friday, 3rd January 2025.
