France is suspending development aid and budgetary assistance to Burkina Faso, its foreign ministry announced Sunday.
Following a proclamation that any violent action against the coup leaders in the neighboring Niger would be considered an act of war by Burkina Faso’s military government, the announcement was made.
The military government in Mali has taken the same position.
It happens after the West African bloc Ecowas’ Sunday night deadline for the military coup leaders in Niger to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and restore constitutional order expired.
Ecowas has not yet released a statement regarding the next course of action, which could involve military intervention.
This would be the “last option” according to the gathering previously if all other diplomatic and political measures were unsuccessful.
