Rt. Hon. S. K. Alban Bagbin has suspended parliamentary proceedings indefinitely following the serving from the Supreme Court injunction on the declaration of four members of parliament seats vacant
Ghana’s Parliament witnessed a chaotic session, marked by an intense struggle between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the seat of majority. This dispute led to Speaker Bagbin’s decision to adjourn the session.
Speaker Bagbin revealed that he had received a directive from the Supreme Court to put a hold on his previous ruling, which declared four parliamentary seats vacant.
He explained that by article 102 of the 1992 constitution and order 64(1) of the standing orders of parliament, the house have a quorum to conduct business but not to make decision
“We currently have a quorum to transact business but not to take decisions”
In view of the current circumstances having to go with questions being raised on the composition and constitution of parliament with regards to public interest, Bagbin in accordance with standing orders 59 adjourned the house indefinitely.
Earlier in the session, NPP MPs staged a walkout, leaving the NDC to occupy both sides of the House. This dramatic exit was a response to escalating tensions and disagreements over the Majority designation.
Following the walk out, the majority leader (now minority leader) Afenyo markins addresses the press that the move was in accordance for peace to prevail:
With Parliament adjourned indefinitely, the immediate future remains uncertain as both the NPP and NDC await further clarity on the substantive case before the Supreme Court.
