The Electoral Commission has made an important announcement to the general public regarding the recent Supreme Court ruling on the Assin North Constituency’s Member of Parliament, Mr. James Gyakye Quayson.
The court declared his election as “unconstitutional, null and void, and of no legal effect,” resulting in a vacant seat in the constituency’s parliamentary representation.
In compliance with Article 12 (5) of the Constitution, as amended, the Electoral Commission has scheduled a By-Election to be held in the Assin North Constituency on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.
To facilitate the election process, the Electoral Commission will accept nominations from prospective candidates for the position of Member of Parliament for the Assin North Constituency.
Nominations will be received at the Assin North District Office of the Commission from June 12 to June 14, 2023. The nomination submission hours are from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on each of the specified days.
Interested candidates are required to download the Nomination Forms from the Commission’s official website (www.ec.gov.gh) starting from June 1, 2023. Nomination Forms should be personally delivered or submitted by the candidate’s proposer or seconder to the Returning Officer at the Assin North District Office of the Commission, following the specified dates and times.
For each candidate, the Nomination Forms must be witnessed by two registered voters acting as the proposer and seconder, and supported by eighteen other registered voters from the constituency, indicating their agreement with the nomination. The Nomination Forms should also include the candidate’s endorsement and consent to the nomination.
Upon submission of the completed Nomination Forms, candidates are required to provide the Returning Officer with two copies of a recent postcard-sized photograph, featuring their full face and ears against a red background.
