The Institute of Public Relations (IPR) Ghana student chapters have amplified its “Speak Truth for Peace” campaign in an X space discussion on the theme “IPR Ghana’s Speak Truth for Peace; Role of the Youth in Promoting Peace”
The engaging X (formerly Twitter) Space discussion, organized by the University of Media, Arts, and Communication-Institute of Journalism (UniMAC-IJ) and University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) student chapters, had participants delving into the pivotal role of youth in promoting truth and ethical communication during elections.
The discussion reinforced IPR Ghana’s commitment to nurturing ethical communication and empowering the next generation of PR professionals. By supporting initiatives of student chapters, IPR Ghana bridges theory with practice, inspiring young leaders to be ambassadors for truth and peace.
Speakers highlighted the transformative impact of youth engagements in shaping narratives and building a united front against divisive rhetoric. The initiative has not only amplified awareness but also mobilized youth action to ensure credible communication during this critical period of the nation.
In his delivery, Osman Abubakar-Sadiq, journalist and Media and Information Literacy (MIL) advocate outlined the process to combat misinformation across various channels as follows: Consider the source of the information – Check the author – Check the date – Read beyond the headline – Check for supporting sources – Ask Experts (fact-checking sites such as Dubawa, GhanaFacts, Fact-Checking Ghana, Dubawa Chatbot, and others). “If you can’t verify the authenticity of what you’re sharing, please don’t share” he pleaded.
Speak Truth for Peace Campaign
IPR Ghana launched the “Speak Truth for Peace” campaign on November 1, 2024, to propagate the importance of promoting truth and ethical communication before, during, and after the 2024 general elections. The institute has since been engaged in activities to educate both political actors and consumers of their message, one of which is the X space organized by its student chapters – UniMAC-IJ and UPSA.
As the 2024 general elections draw near, the “Speak Truth for Peace” campaign stands as a testament to IPR Ghana’s 50th-anniversary theme “PR for Value Creation” this year.
In his closing remarks, the Treasurer of IPR Ghana, Mr. Gabriel Nii Ankrah commended the student chapters for the initiative to amplify the “Speak Truth for Peace” campaign. He encouraged listeners to extend the message of truth beyond the discussion, and exercise their civic rights when the time comes; adding that “the price the wise pay for not taking part in election is for fools to vote and to rule them”.
The discussion brought together journalists, PR students, professionals, and stakeholders to share practical strategies to counter misinformation to promote responsible political discourse.
Moderated by Rosalinda Naa Kai Adjetey, PR Intern and MIL Advocate, the speakers for the discussion include Osman Abubakar-Sadiq – Journalist & MIL Advocate, Samuel Swanzy-Baffoe – Journalist & Comms Volunteer at SYND Ghana, Shadrack Essiful Ghunney – ComSSA & IPR UPSA President, and Eredon Gien Joseph – Journalist & Media Relations Officer at GNAPS.
