2024 marked a year of unprecedented achievements, with Ghanaians from all walks of life reaching new heights.

Ghanaian women, celebrated for their industriousness, were at the forefront of these achievements, setting records across politics, diplomacy, the military, and science.

Dr. Paulina Mefia Denteh 
Dr. Paulina Mefia Denteh, a medical doctor, made history by becoming the first Ghanaian, African, and female foreigner to receive the prestigious red diploma from Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University in Russia. She achieved this milestone after completing her general medicine program at the institution.

This extraordinary accomplishment marked a significant moment in the university’s history and stood as a testament to Dr. Denteh’s unwavering determination, perseverance, and dedication to excellence.

Other Notable Ghanaian Women in 2024

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang became Ghana’s first female vice president-elect, a historic feat 67 years after the country’s independence. She achieved this milestone as the vice-presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which won the 2024 presidential election.

Her trailblazing career includes being the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and the first female running mate for Ghana’s two major political parties.

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey
Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey made history as the first Ghanaian and African woman elected Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations. She was chosen during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa on October 25, 2024, and will assume office in April 2025.

Currently serving as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, her election marks a significant milestone for Ghana and the continent.

Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse
Prof. Browne Klutse became the first female Full Professor of Physics at the University of Ghana in its 75-year history. She also heads the university’s Physics Department and is a prominent climate change scientist.

In 2023, she became the first female to lead the Physics Department, setting a foundation for this 2024 achievement.

Major General Anita Asmah
Major General Anita Asmah became the first Ghanaian and African woman to lead a United Nations Force. In December 2024, she was appointed Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

Before her appointment, she served as the acting UN Force Commander for three months, from July to November 2022.
