Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Health Committee Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie has raised concerns about how politicians especially the minority are politicizing issues concerning health.

While debating on the Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Government for the year 2024, the chairman stated clearly that it was needless for the Minority to go to the dialysis unit of Kolebu to talk about issues concerning financing and Sustainability.

Dr. Ayew making reference to the advanced countries stressed that, even in the USA and UK Social Health Insurance Scheme does not make full payment for dialysis patients therefore the Minority has no right to make politics out of the issue.

He continued by saying that it is not the government’s responsibility to take care of dialysis patients.”Even though the management decisions of Kolebu about placement was an expensive decision and for that matter government coming in to intervene was a good step “he said

However, he commended First Sky Group a private Entity that is helping Dialysis Patients as their Social Cooperate Responsible.

BACKGROUND

Earlier, a notice from the Renal Department of the hospital informing the public about an increment in the cost of renal dialysis from GH¢380 to GH¢765.42 went viral on social media.

The Hospital blamed the high cost of taxation for the recent increase in the cost of dialysis.

The increment was received with mixed reactions including the fact that Parliament was not even aware of the increment.

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh had described the price increase as an illegality.
