In the world of marathon running, where endurance meets passion, one woman stands out for her remarkable journey of perseverance and achievement.
Nana Serwa Wiafe, a Ghanaian American marathoner, defies conventional norms by embarking on her long-distance running journey in her mid-forties.
Born in Kumasi in the early seventies, Nana Serwa’s early years were marked by a love for speed and competition. Her passion for running blossomed during her primary school days in Akropong, where she found solace and joy on the track. However, it was her move to the United States in the early 1980s that provided her with the platform to excel in soccer and track events, igniting her love for speed and endurance.
Despite her demanding career as a senior Technical Project Manager in Healthcare technology, Nana Serwa remains commitmented in marathon running. Her vision and dedication to the sport are exemplified by her participation in numerous races, including half marathons, marathons, and major international events such as the Abbott World Marathon Major.
In January 2024, Nana Serwa celebrated her 53rd birthday by completing her 39th half marathon, with proceeds going to support the Central Texas Food Bank. As she prepares for her upcoming races in Tokyo, Berlin, and beyond, Nana Serwa’s achievements continue to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
On March 3, 2024, Nana Serwa etched her name in history as the first Ghanaian to complete all six major marathon races, including Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, New York, and Tokyo—a feat that reflects her remarkable journey of resilience, passion, and unwavering determination.
As Nana Serwa aptly puts it, “The road ahead is an open book, and with each step, I continue to write the story of my life—a story defined by resilience, passion, and the unyielding spirit of a runner.” Indeed, her journey serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring athletes and dreamers alike, proving that with vision, commitment, and faith, anything is possible.
