The Caucus for Democratic Governance, Ghana (CDG-GH), strongly condemns the unwarranted political attacks on Dr. Johnson Asiamah following his appointment by H.E. President John Mahama as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

These attacks, spearheaded by elements within the opposition NPP, are not only baseless but also a calculated attempt to undermine the credibility of a seasoned professional who has risen through the ranks of the central bank with distinction.

Dr. Asiamah’s appointment comes after years of unjust persecution by the past NPP administration, which ousted him on unsubstantiated allegations of corruption.

Despite an eight-year trial that yielded no evidence or conviction, the NPP continues to level unfounded accusations against him. CDG-GH urges the NPP to uphold the fundamental principle of “innocent until proven guilty,” a cornerstone of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

On 30th January 2025, the state formally dropped all charges against Dr. Asiamah. Internal memos revealed that the former Attorney General, Godfred Odame, was advised to discontinue the prosecution as the alleged offenses had already been resolved by the central bank.

However, Mr. Odame chose to ignore this advice, prolonging the case in what can only be described as a politically motivated witch hunt. CDG-GH views this as a deliberate misuse of state resources to intimidate political opponents, resulting in a needless waste of public funds.

Despite the discontinuation of the case, former NPP appointees and MPs, including Hon. Afenyo Markin and Dr. Gideon Boako, have called on President Mahama to revoke Dr. Asiamah’s appointment.

CDG-GH considers these calls as mischievous and politically driven, aimed at tarnishing the hard-earned reputation of Dr. Asiamah. One cannot help but wonder if these NPP officials are hiding something they fear Dr. Asiamah might uncover at the Bank of Ghana.

It is worth noting that the collapse of banks such as UT and Capital Bank was not caused by Dr. Asiamah but was a direct consequence of the poor governance under former President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia.

CDG-GH advises NPP officials to engage in deep introspection regarding their abysmal performance in government and allow the new administration, led by President Mahama, to reset the country’s economic trajectory under the capable leadership of Dr. Asiamah at the central bank.

CDG-GH fully supports the decision of the current Attorney General to discontinue the case against Dr. Asiamah, a move that not only upholds justice but also saves public funds.

We extend our best wishes to Dr. Asiamah in his new role and urge him to work diligently to strengthen the central bank’s monitoring policies for a robust and resilient economy.

The CDG-GH calls on all Ghanaians to reject these baseless political attacks and support Dr. Asiamah as he works to restore confidence in Ghana’s financial sector.
