The Anchoring Democracy Advocacy Movement-GH (ADAM-GH) has called on democracy-loving organizations and individuals to join a petition urging President Nana Akufo-Addo to remove Jean Mensah, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC). The group alleges bias and misconduct in the administration of Ghana’s electoral system.

According to Azubila Emmanuel Abdul-Salam, Executive Secretary of ADAM-GH, the move is necessary to uphold the nation’s democratic values. In a statement, Mr. Abdul-Salam criticized the EC for acting in what he termed a “subordinate role” to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), undermining public trust in the institution.

“The EC’s actions blatantly disregard the laws governing its operations,” the statement read. “Jean Mensah applies the law selectively, favoring the NPP in one instance and ignoring the same law when it does not serve their interests.”

Concerns About Electoral Neutrality

ADAM-GH has accused the EC of losing its neutrality, citing the appointment of known NPP affiliate Dr. Appiah Hene as the Commission’s Director of IT. Mr. Abdul-Salam also expressed concern over declining voter turnout, which he said reflects eroding public confidence in the EC.

“The 60% voter turnout in the 2024 general elections is a warning signal. Ghanaians are losing faith in Jean Mensah and her team,” he remarked.

Highlighting the historical neutrality of past Electoral Commissioners, such as Dr. Kojo Afari-Gyan and Charlotte Osei, the Executive Secretary called for immediate reforms. He urged the government to establish measures ensuring the EC remains a non-partisan body that fosters public trust.

Allegations of Misconduct

Mr. Abdul-Salam strongly criticized the EC’s handling of parliamentary election disputes, emphasizing that under CI 127, such cases should be resolved in court. He questioned the legality of the EC’s decisions to nullify, re-collate, and recount results in contested parliamentary seats.

“Did the security forces fail to maintain order during these incidents? Did Jean Mensah receive any official report about results being declared under duress? These actions by the EC are unjustifiable,” he said.

Call to Action

ADAM-GH has warned that if Jean Mensah and her deputies do not resign voluntarily, the group will mobilize to ensure their removal through lawful means.

“We cannot allow the EC to destroy Ghana’s democracy. If we fail to act, we risk a future where Ghanaians will refuse to vote altogether,” Mr. Abdul-Salam cautioned.

The group stressed the urgency of restoring neutrality and public confidence in the Electoral Commission, emphasizing the importance of protecting Ghana’s democratic legacy.
