The news of an increase in the salary of members of parliament has alarmed the public, according to Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin, who is concerned about it.
Mr. Bagbin maintained that MPs should be compensated adequately because they carry the bulk of the obligations in the various seats.
Alban Bagbin asserted that lawmakers deserve more during a public discussion in Takoradi, in the Western Region.
“You oppose anything that is given to the person you fought so hard to elect. Alban Bagbin remarked, “Even though you go on his door every day to ask for money to pay for school and hospital expenses, give to churches, festivals, and funerals, you hate to hear that his salary is being increased, there must be a problem.
Over the years, MPs have argued for an increase in their pay, claiming that, unlike public sector employees, they have not had their pay reviewed.
