As December approaches, there is a discernible atmosphere of hope and anticipation, yet it is accompanied by various uncertainties and difficulties.

Electorates find themselves in a critical position to weigh and choose between different candidates, a decision that could redefine governance and set new priorities for the country for years to come. Each passing day brings forth resounding echoes of policies from candidates who are as diverse as they are decisive.

With multiple political parties participating in the race, it’s obvious that the NPP and the NDC stand tall due to their historical momentum and popularity. Presidential candidates running on either party’s ticket signify a decisive outcome: either the NDC wins and the NPP loses, or vice versa. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), are the dominant contenders in the upcoming presidential race. Both candidates are optimistic about their chances in December’s election, sparking intense debate since declaring their ambitions.

Dr. Bawumia, the current Vice President, likened his role to that of a driver’s mate, whose mandate is just a supportive role to the President. However, if given the opportunity to become President, he would move into the driver’s seat, where he would have the constitutional authority to pursue his vision and priorities. This analogy underscores his transition from a supportive role in governance to the presidency. Thus, the shift from assisting in governance to leading it.

Some citizens believe it is a strategy to cleanse himself of the sins of the Akufo-Addo administration, while others see his ambition as a clear expression of readiness to take on greater responsibility.

On the other hand, John Dramani Mahama, the former President, is determined to hark back to his past glories during his tenure of office. He also believes that if given the power, he will continue the good work he started during his presidency. Thus, not only does he reflect on his past accomplishments but also emphasizes continuity and future development should he be voted into power.

Some are optimistic about his return, believing John Mahama could continue positive initiatives if re-elected, while others are skeptical, questioning whether Mahama’s return would bring about real change.

Infrastructure development, economic policies, social welfare, and governance reforms have been significant battlegrounds for competing for voter support. Both candidates have presented contrasting visions in these areas to appeal to the emotions of voters and gain their support.

However, despite the dominance of the NPP and NDC, smaller parties and independent candidates are influencing the election scene by advocating alternative policies and ideologies. Their participation broadens the debate and provides voters with more options in the face of the major parties.

Amid the spirited debates and electoral dynamics, it is hopeful that the collective decision made in December will be a testament to our commitment to progress and the exercise of democracy.
